Subject: Excellent Book
In the first chapter, Lewis discusses a textbook for upper education that he refers to as “The Green Book” and refers to its authors as “Gaius” and “Titius”. (The book, which had a green cover on it, is The Control of Language written by Alex King and Martin Kelty in 1940). Lewis also talks about another author he refers to as “Orbilius” (The Reading and Writing of English written by E.G. Biaggini in 1936)
Lewis writes, “I doubt whether we are sufficiently attentive to the importance of elementary text-books. That is why I have chosen as the starting point for these lectures a little book on English intended for boys and girls in the upper forms of schools. I do not think the authors of this book (there were two of them) intended any harm, and I owe them, or their publisher, good language for sending me a complimentary copy. At the same time I shall have nothing good to say of them.”
Lewis uses the term “Tao” as his standard for the established norms that guide the principles by which education is derived from. For us, it would be like a set of morals based on Christian values that are widely recognized by society. The Author writes, “This conception in all its forms, Platonic, Aristotelian, Stoic, Christian, and Oriental alike, I shall henceforth refer to for brevity simply as ‘the Tao’.” Lewis criticizes the material used by the authors in the Green book as a means of influencing the students through subjective means.
Lewis further writes, “The operation of the Green Book and its kind is to produce what may be called Men without Chests. It is an outrage that they should be commonly spoken of as Intellectuals. This gives them the chance to say that he who attacks them attacks Intelligence. It is not so. They are not distinguished from other men by any unusual skill in finding truth nor any virginal ardour to pursue her.” How many times have we heard negative responses from Liberals and Marxists to genuine inquiry and questions coming from the public about moral standards? (e.g. Men participating in Women’s sports or Men identifying as Women).
Considering that these lectures took place during the Second World War, Lewis was very concerned about objectives being presented by the textbook authors to the students. It appears that academia was being infiltrated in England by Socialism (much like it was in the United States in the 1930’s particularly at the University level). In his last lecture Lewis wrote, “A dogmatic belief in objective value is necessary to the very idea of a rule which is not tyranny or an obedience which is not slavery. I am not here thinking solely, perhaps not even chiefly, of those who are our public enemies at the moment. The process which, if not checked, will abolish Man, goes on apace among Communists and Democrats no less than among Fascists.”
We have witnessed for ourselves the results of propaganda along with Liberal and Marxist ideologies being taught within the Public Educational System of the United States. Learning stops when truth and history are altered for the sake of disordered man-made ideologies that have led to the destruction of Christian values and the morals of society.
This book points to the dangers of liberal ideologies which ultimately lead to tyranny and eventually Communism. If you haven’t read anything by C.S. Lewis, The Abolition of Man is a good place to begin. It is worth your time reading.
